Jussi Jääskeläinen (s. 19. huhtikuuta 1975Mikkeli) on suomalainen jalkapalloilija, pelipaikaltaan maalivahti. Hän edustaa Englannin valioliigan Bolton Wanderersia ja on pelannut myös Suomen maajoukkueessa.

Palloliitto ja urheilutoimittajat valitsivat Jääskeläisen Suomen vuoden jalkapalloilijaksi^[2] Vuonna 1998 hänet palkittiin Kultaisella hanskalla.^[3] vuonna 2007.

Jääskeläinen edusti juniorina Mikkelin Kissoja ja Mikkelin Palloilijoita.^[4] Hän debytoi Veikkausliigassa MP:n edustusjoukkueessa 17-vuotiaana vuonna 1992 ja nousi joukkueen ykkösmaalivahdiksi vuonna 1994. Vuonna 1996 Jääskeläinen siirtyi Vaasan Palloseuraan, jota hän edusti kahden kauden ajan. Jälkimmäisellä kaudella VPS voitti SM-hopeaa Jääskeläisen pelatessa kauden kaikki ottelut.^[5]

Vuonna 1997 Jääskeläinen siirtyi englantilaiseen Bolton Wanderersiin, joka pelasi tuolloin 1. divisioonassa. Hän nousi nopeasti Boltonin ykkösmaalivahdiksi. Jääskeläinen on ollut tärkeässä roolissa, kun Bolton on 2000-luvulla sijoittunut Valioliigassa kahdesti UEFA Cup^[6] Häntä pidetään yhtenä Valioliigan parhaista maalivahdeista.^[7] -paikkaan oikeuttaville sijoituksille. Seuran kannattajayhdistys valitsi hänet vuoden 2007 pelaajaksi.

Jääskeläisen ensimmäinen maaottelu oli alle 18-vuotiaiden ottelu Belgiaa vastaan 13. elokuuta 1992. hän pelasi seitsemän poikien ja 14 nuorten maaottelua. Hänet valittiin nuorten maajoukkueen parhaaksi pelaajaksi vuonna 1997.^[3]

Ensimmäisen A-maaottelunsa Jääskeläinen pelasi 25. maaliskuuta 1998 Maltaa vastaan. Hän oli maajoukkueessa pitkään Antti Niemen varamiehenä, mutta nousi ykkösmaalivahdiksi vuonna 2005 Niemen vetäydyttyä maajoukkueesta. Hän pelasi Suomen kaikissa otteluissa EM 2008- ja MM 2010 -karsinnoissa.^[3] Jääskeläinen ilmoitti loka–marraskuussa 2009, että jälkimmäiset karsinnat olivat todennäköisesti hänen viimeisensä maajoukkueessa.^[8][9] Hän on pelannut urallaan 55 A-maaottelussa.^[3]

Jääskeläinen on naimisissa suomalaisen Tessan kanssa. Parilla on pojat William, Emil ja Robin.

Jääskeläinen on koulutukseltaan sähköasentaja.

King Finn: Jussi Jaaskelainen performed a string of outstanding saves to thwart Hull at home

There is a tendency to describe footballing imports as mercenaries with little concept of loyalty to their English employers.

Jussi Jaaskelainen is a one-man rebuttal of such suggestions and he marked a landmark occasion with a remarkable display of defiance to secure Bolton back-to-back wins.

This was Jaaskelainen’s 400th game in a decade of service to Wanderers and, while Matt Taylor delivered the decisive goal, the Finn was the prime cause of victory.

“His performance was unbelievable,” said his manager, Gary Megson.

“It was as good as you’re ever going to see. He will get the headlines and rightly so.”

With his blond mop and luminous green top as distinctive as his excellence, Jaaskelainen exerted a magnetic effect upon Hull’s efforts. Among 10 saves, a point-blank block to deflect Geovanni’s diving header attracted most acclaim.

“That was the turning point,” said Phil Brown. “He’s a world-class goalkeeper, certainly one of the best in the Premier League.”

Wanderers’ long-time assistant manager was thwarted by his former goalkeeper, who was abetted by the woodwork when Marlon King contrived to execute a mid-air volleyed back-heel with near perfection to strike the far post.

This was not the reunion Brown had envisaged and a familiarity with the Bolton ethos was of no assistance.

“The backs-to-the-wall, tin-hat mentality has over the years, been a Bolton trait,” he reflected.

Wanderers were able to mount a rearguard action after Taylor struck. He has long provided evidence that he can strike a ball beautifully with his left foot.

A half-volley from the edge of the penalty area, after Hull failed to clear a corner, may not rank among Taylor’s finest goals, but it was clinically dispatched nonetheless.

In harness with Jaaskelainen’s heroics, Taylor completed a fine week for Bolton. It is one that has provided respite for Megson, elevating his side from the foot of the table to the top half.

“It can be a springboard,” added the manager. Hull’s winning habit, meanwhile, has been mislaid. Momentum has been a feature of their start, but this was a third successive setback.

For the first time, they have acquired the wrong sort.

Jussi Albert Jääskeläinen (born 19 April 1975 in Mikkeli, Southern Savonia) is a Finnishfootball goalkeeper who currently plays for English Premier League club Bolton Wanderers.

Jääskeläinen made his Veikkausliiga debut in Finland for MP Mikkeli in 1992, and became the club's first choice goalkeeper in 1994. In 1996, he moved to VPS Vaasa where he spent two seasons. Jääskeläinen was bought by Bolton Wanderers of the then First Division in 1997. He soon established himself as the club's first choice keeper, though a cruciate ligament injury ruled him out for much of Bolton's 2000–2001 promotion season. The following season, he was voted the best goalkeeper in the Premiership by sponsors Barclaycard. He has also been tracked at his time at Bolton by highly rated clubs such as Arsenal, Celtic, Real Madrid, Manchester United and AC Milan.

On 13 May 2007, Jääskeläinen received Bolton's "Player of the Year Award" and also the "Players' Player of the Year Award" after helping Bolton secure a UEFA Cup spot for only the second time in their history.^[1]Despite much speculation linking him with a move away from Bolton when his contract expired following the 2007–08 season, Jääskeläinen agreed a new four-year contract on 11 June,^[2] which he signed on 9 July.^[3]

His 400th appearance came against Manchester City on 2 November 2008, with his 400th start coming six days later against Hull City. After twelve years with the club, Jääskeläinen was granted a testimonial match against Hibernian in August 2009 in which he kept a clean sheet.^[4][5]

Jääskeläinen made his debut for Finland on 25 March 1998 against Malta. He was Finland's second choice behind Antti Niemi for years, but after Niemi retired from international football in 2005, Jääskeläinen finally became the Finnish number one. On the 29 October 2009 Jääskeläinen announced his retirement from international football having collected 55 caps for his country. In explaining his decision Jääskeläinen stated that he hoped that it would allow him to prolong his club career.^{[6] [7]}

Jääskeläinen and his wife Tessa have lived in Bolton for 12 years and have three sons together: William aged 10, Emil aged 8 and a 3-year-old named Robin.
