Finns win bronze at women's worlds
The Finnish women's hockey team pulled away with a dominant third period to down Sweden 4-1, winning the bronze medal at the World Women's Hockey Championships in Hameenlinna, Finland on Sunday.
After being shutout in two consecutive lopsided losses to Canada and the U.S in the playoff round, Finland rebounded with a decisive win over the Swedish rival.
Finland held a slim 1-0 lead after the first period following Michelle Karvinen's goal. Then Mari Pehkonen's second-period goal made it 2-0, but Sweden quickly responded with a goal by Danijela Rundqvist.
But the third period was all Finland. Mari Saarinen opened the third with a quick goal, and Karvinen added her second of the game five minutes later to build a solid Finnish lead.
The teams were even in virtually every category in the first 40 minutes, matching each other shot-for-shot and even penalty-for-penalty. It wasn't until Karvinen's second goal that the Finnish fans relaxed and celebrated the bronze triumph.
Noora Raty was solid in goal for the Finns, making 27 saves, while Sweden's Valentina Lizana kicked away 23 shots.
It was the eighth meeting for the bronze medal between the nations. Finland now holds a 6-2 advantage in world women's bronze medal games against Sweden and has nine bronze medals overall.
