Samppa Lajunen (born April 23, 1979 in Turku, Finland) is a retired nordic combined athlete who competed during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
A winner of five Winter Olympic Games medals, his career highlight came at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City when Lajunen took won all three gold medals in the Nordic combined events. He also won silver medals at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano in both the 15 km individual and 4 x 5 km team events.
Lajunen also found success at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, winning eight medals. This included one gold (4 x 5 km team: 1999), four silvers (15 km individual: 1999, 2001; 4 x 5 km team: 1997, 7.5 km sprint: 2001); and three bronzes (15 km individual: 2003, 4 x 5 km team: 2001, 2003)
Lajunen ended his career after the season 2003/2004 at a quite early age, 24 years old, and concentrated on his studies at the University of Jyväskylä. In the spring of 2007 he graduated as a Master of Science (Economics and Business Administration).

Anssi Koivurannan kilpaura alkoi epäonnistumisella
– Tavoitteena on, että helmikuun MM-kisojen jälkeen kaulassa roikkuu muutakin kuin kisapassi, yhdistetyn suuri mitalitoivo Anssi Koivuranta toteaa.
Kun Hannu Manninen lopetti menestyksekkään yhdistetyn hiihdon uransa viime vuonna, asiantuntijat ennustivat, että tässä lajissa koittaa useiksi vuosiksi harmaa ja menestymätön aika. Näin siitäkin huolimatta, vaikka Anssi Koivuranta saavutti Sapporon MM-kisojen normaalikilpailussa 2007 yllättäen pronssia vasta 19-vuotiaana.
Kun yhdistetyn kausi alkoi loppuvuodesta 2008, maailmancupin johtajan keltainen liivi on pysynyt koko ajan Anssin yllä. Jo vuodenvaihteessa hän oli voittanut peräti neljä maailmancupin osakilpailua ja johti sarjaa ylivoimaisesti. Kauden ensimmäisten kisojen ykkössija omissa kotimaisemissa Kuusamossa oli Anssille hyvin merkityksellinen asia, mikä antoi potkua muihinkin osakilpailuihin. Kuusamon jälkeen hän oli ykkönen Trondheimissa, Oberhofissa ja Schonachissa.
- Tilanne on itsellenikin kovan luokan yllätys, Anssi naurahtaa. – Tiesin kyllä kauteen lähtiessäni olevani hyvässä kunnossa, ja että varmaan saan joitakin hyviä sijoituksia ja mahdollisesti muutaman palkintopallipaikankin, mutta ihan tätä en osannut odottaa.
Kuusamossa syntynyt ja kasvanut Anssi on rento ja hyvin miellyttävä nuori mies, jolla on koko ajan silmissä pilke ja huumori päällä. Menestys ei ole noussut nuppiin. Hän vakuuttaa, ettei hän tämänhetkisestä tilanteestaan huolimatta suostu ottamaan minkäänlaisia ennakkopaineita helmikuun lopussa Tshekin Liberecissä pidettävissä hiihdon MM-kisoissa. Hän viisastelee kuitenkin pyrkivänsä siihen, että kisojen jälkeen kaulassa roikkuisi muutakin kuin kisapassi.
Anssi on maailmanluokan tekijä sekä mäessä että ladulla, mutta näistä kahdesta lajista mäkihyppy kehittyi hänen lajikseen ensiksi. Hiihto seurasi vähän perässä, ja se tuli mukaan kuvioihin hyvin hauskalla tavalla, vaikka asia ei aikoinaan yhtään naurattanut.
– Se kävi oikeastaan sisuuntumisen kautta, Anssi nauraa. – Meillä oli ala-asteen hiihtokisat toka luokalla. Olin saanut joululahjaksi uudet hiihtosukset ja kevättalvella oli sitten kisat, joihin oli tarkoitus panostaa oikein kunnolla. Isä voiteli sukset edellisiltana ja lupasi käsitellä ja harjata ne vielä aamulla ennen töihin lähtöään, että minulla olisi käytössä mahdollisimman liukkaat sukset.
– No, sehän unohti koko jutun, jolloin suksista tuli täysin luistamattomat. Meikä veti kuitenkin kisan läpi, mutta olin ihan reilusti viimeinen ja hävisin kaikille tytöillekin. Se alkoi vähän ottaa nuppiin ja päätin, että ensi kisassa voitan sitten kaikki. Niin siinä sitten kävikin.
– Niillä eka kisojen suksilla ei sen jälkeen enää tarvinnut hiihtää. Olin vähän suutuksissani ja pistelin niillä koulusta kotiin hiekoitettuja pyöräteitä pitkin. Isä ei sanonut siihen mitään vaan se meni vähän niin päin, että minä sanoin sille. Tulin jo niinkin nuorena sanoneeksi aika kovasti, kun vehkeet eivät luistaneet.
Mäkimiehet painivat koko ajan painoindeksisäännön kanssa, ja se koskee myös yhdistetyn kilpailijoita. Anssilla oli aikoinaan hiukan ongelmia, sillä hän oli liian kevyt, mutta nykyään tätä probleemaa ei enää ole. Hän kertoo toki pyrkivänsä mahdollisimman lähelle painoindeksiä, mutta siltikään ei vielä olla edes rajamailla, sillä turvaväliä on kilosta kahteen ihan päivästä riippuen.
Kun Janne Ahonen lopetti mäkimiehen uransa, hän totesi, että nyt hän uskaltaa käydä pitsallakin ilman että tarvitsee pelätä painon nousemista. Anssin tilanne on huomattavasti löysempi.
– En ole hirveän tarkka syömisteni kanssa. Totta kai tiedän, mitä on hyvä syödä ja mitä ei, mutta välillä pitää päästä herkuttelemaan. Uskallan käydä silloin tällöin pitsalla, sillä elämässä pitää olla hauskaa. Pitseriassa poikkeamisesta ei ole mitään haittaa, päinvastoin. Meidän hommamme on sitä paitsi vähän kuluttavampaa kuin pelkkä mäkihyppy.
Kun Anssilta kysyy, onko olemassa mitään ruokalajia, jota hän ei ehdottomasti suostu syömään, sellaista ei löydy edes miettimällä. Hän naureskelee voivansa käydä vaikka nakkikioskilla, jos siltä joskus tuntuu, mutta sellaista tunnetta tulee kuitenkin harvemmin. Kaikki saksalaisen keittiön herkut eivät kuitenkaan Anssia aina puhuttele. Herrasmiehenä hän muotoilee asian siten, että saksalaiset sapuskat saattavat joskus yllättää negatiivisesti.
– Suosikkiruokia taitavat sitten olla roskaruuat, hän nauraa. – Niihin pääsen kuitenkin kiinni vasta keväällä kauden päätyttyä, jolloin niitä voi syödä muutaman päivän. Paino nousee kevään aikana jonkin verran, mutta se alkaa tippua nopeasti jo alkukesästä, kun treenit taas kovenevat.
Anssilla on jo viiden vuoden ajan ollut painonhallinnassaan apuna CLA-Tonalin -niminen rasvahappovalmiste, jota hän kehuu siekailematta.
– Siitä on ollut minulle ääretöntä hyötyä. Olen käyttänyt sitä koko sen viiden vuoden ajan, kun olen kuulunut maajoukkuerinkiin. Otan päivässä 6-8 kapselia tasaisesti aina aterioiden yhteydessä, mutta syksyllä treenien kovetessa ja ennen kautta sitä tulee vedettyä vähän enemmänkin.
– Se vilkastuttaa ja vaikuttaa positiivisesti aineenvaihduntaan, nopeuttaa palautumista ja polttaa rasvaa tosi hyvin. Sen huomaa joka kerta, kun määrää lisää pikkuisen ja samalla liikkuu enemmän. Se tosiaankin toimii.
Anssi käyttää myös Tonalinia markkinoivan Polar Pharman (www.polarpharma.fi) toista tuotetta Antiviriä pitääkseen kaiken maailman flunssapöpöt poissa elimistöstään. Hän syö myös perusvitamiineja valmentajien ohjeiden mukaan. Tonalinia hän kuitenkin käyttää kaikkein säännöllisimmin.
– Olen siihen erittäin tyytyväinen, hän summaa.

Vikersund, Norway - Anssi Koivuranta of Finland clinched the Nordic combined skiing World Cup title on Sunday with an eighth-place finish in the season-finale won by American world champion Bill Demong.
Koivuranta, 20, only required 29th place to clinch the title in the case that Norwegian rival Magnus Moan won, and all speculation ended when the Finn placed fourth in the morning ski-jumping portion.
Demong got his fifth season win by clocking 26 minutes 31.6 in the 10-kilometres cross-country pursuit, ahead of Norwegians Petter Tande (9.8 seconds behind) and Mikko Kokslien (10.3).

Vikersund, Norway - Anssi Koivuranta of Finland all but assured himself of the World Cup title in Nordic combined skiing on Saturday when he won the penultimate competition of the season.
Koivuranta dominated the ski-jumping round and then cruised to his seventh season victory in 26 minutes 3.9 seconds for the 10- kilometres cross-country pursuit.
World champion Bill Demong of the United States came second 6.5 points behind the winner and Norway's Magnus Moan was third, 13.2 seconds off the pace.

France - Magnus Moan of Norway made up a huge deficit on Finland's World Cup leader Anssi Koivuranta to claim his fifth season victory in Nordic combined skiing on Saturday.
Trailing Koivuranta by almost two minutes after the morning ski-jumping portion, Moan passed his rival in the closing stages of the
10-kilometre cross-country pursuit to win in 26 minutes 6.8 seconds.
Moan has now won three of the last four races, five in the season and a dozen overall.
Koivuranta trailed by 9.2 seconds and German Bjoern Kircheisen placed third with a deficit of 32.9 seconds.
Koivuranta wins combined to increase World Cup lead
Trondheim, Norway - World Cup leader Anssi Koivuranta of Finland was in command to win the Nordic combined over 10 kilometres in Trondhein, Norway on Sunday.
Koivuranta enjoyed a 25.9-second advantage over second-placed Bjoern Kircheisen of Germany, with France's Jason Lamy Chappuis third, 34.6 seconds behind the Finn.
It was the second win of the season for Koivuranta, who led after the jump and finished in 24 minutes 41.9 seconds (138.0 points/24:41.9)

Anssi Koivuranta (born 3 July 1988 in Kuusamo) is a Nordic combined skier from Finland. Best known for that he won 2008–09 FIS Nordic Combined World Cup. He won the gold medal in the 4 × 5 km team event and a bronze medal in the 15 km Gundersen race at the 2007 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Sapporo. He is known for his immense ski jumping skills, but has also improved his cross-country skiing during season 2008-2009.

Early life and career
Born in Kuusamo, Koivuranta represents the sports club Kuusamon Erä Veikot from Kuusamo.[1] He began with ski jumping when he was six years old, breaking his arm in a jump during his first year. He took up Nordic combined when he was eight.[2] Koivuranta eventually grew to be 1.72 m (5 ft 71⁄2 in) tall; his weight is 55 kilograms (120 lb).[2]
Koivuranta made his international debut in the B World Cup in March 2003.[1] Koivuranta competed in the World Cup for the first time in Kuusamo 2003, but was disqualified from both races because he had too long skis.[citation needed] In February 2004 he won a bronze medal at the Junior World Championships in Stryn. In March 2004, at the very end of the 2003–04 season, Koivuranta made his proper debut in the World Cup circuit—in two races in Lahti, he finished 24th and 23rd respectively.[1]

Already in December the same year, in the early 2004–05 season, he finished among the top ten for the first time, with an eighth place in the sprint race in Trondheim. His first podium achievement came in January 2005, with a third place in Sapporo. Almost one month after that he finished sixth in the sprint distance at the 2005 World Championships. Before the season was over, he would win a bronze medal at the Junior World Championships in Rovaniemi.[1]

The 2005–06 season saw Koivuranta open with a second place, in Kuusamo in November. During the course of the season he achieved another second place as well as two third places.[1] He also earned a bronze medal in the 4 x 5 team event at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. In December 2006 he achieved two second places in a row, and followed with consistent achievements among the top fifteen. At the 2007 World Championships in Sapporo he won the gold medal in the 4 x 5 km team event, won a bronze medal in the 15 km Gundersen race and finished fourth in the sprint. At his last Junior World Championships, held in Tarvisio in March 2007, he won a gold and a silver medal.[1] The same level of performance continued in the 2007–08 season, placing twice on the podium.[1]

Having been among the better ski jumpers in the Nordic combined sport from 2004, Koivuranta struggled somewhat in the cross-country skiing part. Concentrating on improving his cross-country skiing abilities, from 2005 he managed to improve little by little. He owed his increased share of podium achievements to this training. As of 2008–09 Koivuranta had become one of the better cross-country skiers as well, in part thanks to a newly appointed coach on the Finnish national team.[citation needed] Koivuranta won his first World Cup race in November 2008 in Kuusamo. He followed up with victories in Trondheim and Oberhof in December, and Schonach and Chaux Neuve in January.[1][3] The World Championships in Liberec 2009, was not any good for Koivuranta, he did not take any medal at all. Two fourth places as the best result. Koivuranta was also sick under the World Championships witch resulted in bad results and that he was unable to compete in the team competition.
On 14 March Koivuranta won the Gundersen event at Vickersund, the penultimate race of the season. The following day he finished 8th in the 2nd Gundersen of weekend. This has high enough for him to clinch the 2008–09 FIS Nordic Combined World Cup, his first world cup title. He was 100 points before the man on the second place Magnus Moan, at the end.

In the ski jumping Finnish Championships 2009 the big favourite was Harri Olli. But Koivuranta won the ski jumping championships, despite he is actually a Nordic combined skier. Koivuranta won with 13 points before Olli and 19 before Tami Kiuru, who received the third place. But Koivuranta says the he would not compete in the Ski jumping world championships in Liberec 2009. He says he has his focus on the Nordic combined world championships.

Something that not many people knows is that Koivuranta actually won a FIS-Cupski jumping 2006. He was better than jumpers such as Emmanuel ChedalNicolas Dessum. He was involved in the Finnish team who took a third place in the Junior World Championships in Rovaniemi 2005. In the individual Gundersen competition he took a 12th place. Koivuranta's personal best ski jump is 214,5 metres as trialjumper in Planica.[2] It was in the second training round that he jumped 214,5 and tas on the second place of all. Worth a mention is that the best jumper jumped with lower speed.
Hill Records
- He holds the hill record in Kanzlersgrund, the K-120 hill in Oberhof, with 147 metres.[4][5]
- The hill record in Vikersund K-105 witch is 122,5 metres is also took by Koivuranta.
- He has the non-official record in Liberec with 106,5 metres.
- With 148,5 metres he has also made the longest jump in the Vogtlandarena in Klingenthal, but he fell just after landing. The pressure on his legs was too high.
